What We're Learning
Reading- We will continue working with poetry, drama, and figurative language
Writing-Creating poetry using figurative language.
Social Studies- Continued study of the regions of Texas, maps and graphs, and directions.
Bookopolis and Reading Logs- In a decision that I am hopeful will make life easier for both you and your child, I have decided to abandon Bookopolis as a reading log. It was a trial run for us, and I feel your child’s time would be better spent reading rather than logging into a website that isn’t always the most efficient. I’m sending home a MONTHLY reading log that I will check at the end of each week. It will only be turned in at the end of the month. It’s very simple, and all you are asked to do is sign your initials.
Vocabulary to Replace Spelling- As I mentioned last week, we are also transitioning to a new format for word work. We will not use a traditional spelling list, rather a list of greek/latin roots to work on. Students are NOT responsible for spelling the words on the list, but understanding and applying the meaning. I will still put the stems and words in spelling city for the VOCABULARY portion, but I will not be using this as a spelling tool. The word work will be focused on in class and should help to alleviate homework loads. A list will come home in your child’s BLUE folder today.
Leveled Readers- As a school wide initiative, this week we will begin sending home on-level readers for each of our students. These books are an additional, OPTIONAL piece of reading material for your child to read during the week. They are welcome to read these during their required 20 minutes, or continue to read texts of their choosing. Please have your child return the books to school daily in their folders. If you have further questions, please let us know! Thank you and happy reading!
