Mr. Mike Royer MM
Mike Royer holds a bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music Education from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana as well as a Masters in Percussion Performance from the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona. Currently Mike serves as Director of Percussion and Assistant Band Director it Sunnyvale ISD in Dallas, TX. In Sunnyvale, Royer directs the Jazz Band, Marching Band, Percussion Ensembles, Latin Jazz Combo. He also facilitates a Drum Circle for middle school students three days a week. From 2009-2014, Mike performed with the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Bohuslav Rattay and the Lake Charles Civic Ballet. In 2013, Royer was a semi finalist for the Atlanta Symphony Modern Snare Drum Competition. From 2008-2010, he performed with the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps, and received the Rookie of the Year award in 2008. From 2011-2012, Royer was a member of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, achieving the Fred Sanford award for high percussion in 2011. During his time at McNeese, Mike was the percussion instructor at Sam Houston, Sulphur, and A. M. Barbe High School’s in the Lake Charles area and in 2013, worked as an undergraduate assistant with The Pride of McNeese Marching Band. Originally a Houston native, he continues to teach privately in Houston and Lake Charles via skype, and has really enjoyed this opportunity to continue to work with students. Mike joined the percussion staff at Legends Drum and Bugle Corps from Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2014, and serves on the percussion staff. Royer enjoys playing steel pans and has had many opportunities playing pan where he most recently performed at the 2014 Miss USA Pageant reception in Baton Rouge, LA. Mike has also had the privilege of studying with world-renowned pan artist Andy Narell. Most recently Mike has been a Guest Artist with the Cedar Creek Summer Drummin Camp in summers 2015 and 2016. Royer is a student of Dr. Lonny Benoit, Dr. Norman Weinberg and Chris Wabich.
