Selection by Lottery policy:
I use a random selection method based on interest forms to invite students into many after school clubs. I distribute invitations to fill out interest forms before the project will start with all the important details and the number of parts available. This is typically based on 25 available speaking roles or instrument parts.
The usual response is 75-100 interest forms returned for each project. To make the selection, these papers are laid out face-down on a large table. Five teachers not involved in the project are asked to pull 5 random papers from the table. (5 x 5 = 25) This serves to create a heterogeneous group of mixed ability levels and ages. These 25 students receive a welcome packet while the other 50-75 receive a small “thank for your interest, please try again next year” letter.
